How Do Boom Gates Compare to Sliding Gates for Car Park Security?

Home Commercial Gates Boom Gates How Do Boom Gates Compare to Sliding Gates for Car Park Security?
Whether your priority is security, profits, safety, or traffic management, having the right gate for a car park – commercial, residential, or otherwise – is so important. At BAGS, we help our clients make informed decisions about the right gates for their needs. Today, we’ll discuss boom gates vs. sliding gates in car parks.

Should You Choose a Boom Gate or Sliding Gate for Your Car Park’s Security?

Car access gates are used for:
    • Security: Preventing unauthorised entry at commercial properties, industrial sites, and private roads.
    • Traffic Management: Controlling vehicle flow in high-traffic areas, toll booths, and parking facilities.
    • Access Control: Being a checkpoint in parking garages and security checkpoints.

How Do Boom Gates Work for Car Park Security?

A boom gate is a car access control system, identified by its long, horizontal arm. It controls vehicle access and traffic flow in restricted areas. Activated by remote controls, keypads, or sensors, these automated or manual systems enhance security by preventing unauthorised entry and improving traffic management at checkpoints and facilities.

An automatic boom gate consists of a long arm attached to a base. The arm is raised to allow vehicles to pass and lowered to block entry. Activation can be done manually, with a remote control, proximity card, or through sensor-based automation like RFID technology. When automated boom gates are activated, a motor raises or lowers the boom arm, controlling access to the restricted area.

Boom Gates for Car Park Safety

    • Great For: High-traffic areas like shopping centres and industrial sites where rapid entry and exit are crucial.
    • Security Features: Restrict access using remote controls, swipe cards, RFID tags, or ticketing machines.
    • Traffic Management: Streamline traffic flow by controlling entry and exit, reducing queues, and aiding in the payment process.
    • Space Efficiency: Require less space than sliding or swing gates, making them suitable for areas with limited room.
    • Integration: Easily integrate with surveillance cameras and access control systems for monitoring and security.

How Do Sliding Gates Work for Car Park Security?

Sliding gates are a type of gate that moves horizontally along a track instead of swinging open, making it ideal for properties with limited space or sloped driveways. It uses wheels and a ground track or a cantilever system to guide its horizontal movement, providing security and convenience. Sliding gates are available in various materials, can be automated, and offer a more secure and less intrusive option than traditional swing gates.

Most sliding gates have wheels that roll along a fixed track installed on the ground. The gate slides sideways, parallel to a fence line, to allow entry and exit. This means that while a boom gate goes up and down, a sliding gate goes left to right – so both have different applications.

Sliding Gates for Car Park Safety

    • Great For: Locations requiring maximum security against impact and vandalism, such as large open entrances or industrial complexes.
    • Security Features: Retained within a rigid structure, making them more difficult to force open or breach with a vehicle impact compared to other gate types.
    • High Security: Offer enhanced security by being less susceptible to breaches than other barrier types.
    • Space Consideration: While secure, they require more space to open and close along the fence line compared to boom gates.

What’s the Best Gate for My Car Park?

To choose between a boom or sliding gate for car park access control, consider:

    • Traffic Volume: Boom gates excel in managing high traffic volumes due to their rapid operation.
    • Security Level: Sliding gates are generally more secure against physical impact.
    • Space Requirements: Boom gates are more space-efficient and don’t require extensive room for operation.
    • Cost: While costs vary, boom gates are often considered the more cost-effective solution for high-volume traffic management.
    • Speed: Sliding gates can be slower to open and close compared to some swing gate systems.
    • Track Maintenance: The ground track of a sliding gate needs to be kept clean and free of debris for smooth operation.
